One of my favorite language families is the Romance language family. Some of the most well-known languages in this family are Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French. There are a number of other languages in this family, but that is for a different day.

All of these languages come from Latin and have some similarities due to their common ancestry.

In this post, I am going to share what I have found to be the toughest Romance language to learn. First, I want to provide a list of the Romance languages that I have experience with. These are Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. So, which is the most difficult out of the group?

My answer is French

I have dabbled with French for a few months last year, but I stopped because I wanted to work on other languages. I want to work with it again later in 2017 or next year. I would like to make French a long-term language study at some point.

Why do I find it difficult?

It is the combination of the somewhat complex grammar of Romance languages with difficult pronunciation. All of the other languages in the group that I mentioned before have a straightforward pronunciation system. Portuguese would be the only language with somewhat difficult pronunciation but like Spanish, Italian and Romanian there are not a lot of silent letters. French has the infamous silent last letter, but sometimes this final letter of a word is not silent. Here are a few examples

Je suis Fran├žais-I am French

In the above example, the last s of the word suis is silent because the next word begins with an F

Je suis un homme- I am a man

In the above example, the last s of the word suis would be pronounced because the next word starts with u (a vowel)

This pronunciation along with the already somewhat complex grammar is why I put French as the most difficult Romance language. It is still a lot of fun and I would love to make French a longer-term project in the future.
